The Indonesian government has revealed why it rejected a US proposal to hold a debate on the Uyghur issue in China's Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region at the United Nations Human Rights Council.
As is well known, Indonesia itself does not support resolutions proposed by the United States regarding discussions on the Uyghur issue.
“Indonesia believes that the approach proposed by its advocates at today's Human Rights Council will not bring much progress, largely because it has not received endorsement and support from the countries concerned,” said Ambassador Febrian A. Rudyard. mentioned in the publication, Geneva, Indonesia. Officially obtained from CNN Indonesia.
"Based on these considerations, Indonesia cannot support the draft decision to hold a debate on the human rights situation in Xinjiang," he continued.
While not endorsing the proposed arguments, it stresses that Indonesia will continue to play an active role in resolving the Uyghur issue.
"As a country with the world's largest Muslim population and an active and vibrant democracy, Indonesia cannot ignore the plight of its Muslim brothers and sisters in other parts of the world," Febrian said.
"It is Indonesia's responsibility as a member of the Muslim community to take care of each other," he said.
As reported by AFP, the US had previously asked the UN Human Rights Council to hold a debate on human rights violations in Xinjiang.
The proposal was presented in a draft resolution, supported by the US, UK, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway.
